The Student Centered Education Project is a special education grant funded by the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Instruction. We provide information and support to families, educators and community members who have an interest in locating and understanding special education services. In addition, the site provides information on instructional practices, agency services for students with disabilities and listings of post-high school opportunities for students.
The Student Centered Education Project seeks to increase the communication and cooperation among, families, educators, school administrators, community organizations and other resource groups to serve the best interests of students with disabilities receiving special education inWashington State.
The project promotes collaborative systemic change to build leadership and partnerships between families/caregivers and educators in both special and general education in order to improve student outcomes.
The purpose of this project is to develop a statewide resource, referral and training system that supports communication and activities between families and educators. The resource and referral system is intended to meet the needs of families and educators as they seek to locate the resources, training and supports which will increase their understanding of special education services.
The goals of the project are to:
- Coordinate the work of the project with other organizations and individuals throughout the duration of the project, including culturally, economically, geographically diverse groups.
- Design, implement and maintain a statewide referral and resources system which will meet the needs of families and educators.
- Design, implement and maintain a training system that enhances the communication and activities between families and educators to improve educational outcomes for children and youth who are eligible for special education services.
- Develop and maintain a diverse cadre of trained IEP facilitators as a part of the broader Dispute Resolution System in Washington State.
- Disseminate referral and resource information for families, community members and educators

IEP Meeting facilitators
The project trains and provides IEP Facilitators to assist schools and families in conducting successful IEP meetings. The IEP Facilitator is a neutral third party who is responsible for assisting the parties in the IEP meeting so that they are able to develop and IEP that meets state requirements and creates the best possible program for the student.
School/ Family Partnership Training
The project is developing training for schools and families to strengthen school/family partnerships in order to improve student performance.
